Tea App Data Breach Exposes 72,000 User Images, Including IDs and Selfies
July 26, 2025
Tea, a rising social app designed for women to share anonymous experiences about men they've dated, has confirmed a significant data breach that exposed 72,000 user images. The compromised data includes 13,000 selfies and photo IDs submitted for account verification, along with 59,000 images from posts, comments, and direct messages.
The company clarified that no emails or phone numbers were leaked and emphasized that only users who registered before February 2024 were affected by the breach. In a statement, Tea said it has brought in third-party cybersecurity experts and taken immediate steps to secure its systems.
“We have engaged third-party cybersecurity experts and are working around the clock to secure our systems,” the company said. “At this time, we have implemented additional security measures and have fixed the data issue.”
The breach was brought to wider attention after users on the imageboard 4chan reportedly began sharing personal data and images obtained from an exposed database associated with the app.
The incident comes just as Tea reached viral status, climbing to the top of the free app charts in Apple’s App Store. Despite its popularity, the breach raises serious concerns about the safety of user-submitted content—especially in apps designed around anonymity and sensitive personal stories.
