Aerial Drones Take Flight as the Future of Automated Business Operations
June 3, 2025
A new report from Forrester Research reveals that aerial drones are emerging as a crucial enabler of physical automation across a range of industries. These high-tech tools are delivering new levels of efficiency, intelligence, and safety to labor-intensive operations — from construction and manufacturing to agriculture and public safety.

Co-authored by Forrester analysts Charlie Dai, Frederic Giron, Merritt Maxim, Arjun Kalra, and Bill Nagel, the report forecasts that drones will deliver measurable business benefits within the next two years, as technologies mature and regulatory pathways become clearer.

Addressing the Cost of Manual Operations
Many organizations still rely on outdated, manual processes that drive up operational costs and expose workers to unnecessary risk. Drones offer a compelling solution.

“Drones can do things more safely than humans,” said Rob Enderle, president of the Enderle Group. “They can go into hazardous environments, navigate tight or toxic spaces, and reduce staffing needs through autonomous or semi-autonomous operation.”

From inspecting high-voltage lines to assessing the structural integrity of a bridge or warehouse roof, drones can replace dangerous manual tasks and eliminate the need for costly scaffolding or operational downtime.

Sensors Are the Game-Changer
While drones are eye-catching, the real innovation lies in their sensors.

“The magic of the drone is in the sensor, not the flying vehicle,” said DaCoda Bartels, SVP of operations at drone services firm FlyGuys. “A drone-mounted sensor can capture high-resolution data far beyond human capability — all while keeping workers safely on the ground.”

These sensors can include thermal imaging, LiDAR, multispectral cameras, and real-time data streaming — tools that not only make inspections faster and safer, but also smarter and more accurate.

Real Use Cases Across Industries
Industries are already finding powerful applications for drone automation:

  • Manufacturing: Drones can inspect hard-to-reach areas like crane systems or factory rooftops without halting operations. “It eliminates the need for scaffolding and reduces downtime,” said Akash Kadam, a mechanical engineer at Caterpillar.

  • Predictive Maintenance: Thermal sensors help identify overheating machinery or electrical faults, allowing real-time detection of issues and proactive maintenance.

  • Agriculture: Drones collect multispectral images of crops to analyze health, optimize irrigation, and identify pest damage — reducing manual scouting and improving yield.

  • Construction: Companies like Rogers-O’Brien Construction use drones to create 3D maps of worksites, assess storm damage, and track building progress in near real-time.

  • Infrastructure & Energy: Drones gather visual data at high speed and precision, forming “digital twins” of assets such as oil rigs, roads, or wind farms, said Dean Bezlov of MYX Robotics.

  • Benefits: Speed, Safety, and Scale
One of drones’ greatest advantages is scalable, high-speed data collection. “You can gather two to three images per second, with a resolution no human-held camera can match,” said Bezlov.

In minutes, companies can view data that once took days to collect — a game-changer for decision-making and operations.

Moreover, a single operator can command multiple drones, making it possible to do more with fewer human resources — a crucial factor in industries with staffing shortages or aging workforces.

The Roadblocks: Regulation and Rapid Innovation
Despite their promise, drones face regulatory and technological hurdles.

“The FAA’s rules around beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations still limit many high-value use cases,” said Mark N. Vena of SmartTech Research. Urban operations face especially tight constraints due to privacy concerns and airspace complexity.

“There’s nothing limiting the tech from scaling — it’s regulation that’s the bottleneck,” noted FlyGuys’ Bartels.

Companies are also challenged by rapid innovation cycles. “What you buy today might be obsolete next year,” Enderle warned. The wide variety of models and capabilities can make selecting the right drone for your use case a risky bet.

Looking Ahead: Drones as Labor Replacements
We’re still in the early stages, but the trajectory is clear: autonomous, AI-driven drones are set to replace many human-intensive roles over the next decade.

“As robotic drones become more autonomous, the need for pilots will decline,” Enderle said. “Within 10 years, drones will be doing many of the most dangerous jobs humans do today.”

The Forrester report concludes that drones are more than just flying cameras — they’re rapidly becoming essential tools for business automation, intelligent monitoring, and strategic decision-making in a world increasingly shaped by digital and physical convergence.
