Bedrock Robotics Emerges from Stealth with $80M to Automate Construction Vehicles
July 16, 2025
After operating quietly for over a year, autonomous vehicle startup Bedrock Robotics has officially launched with a bold mission and a substantial $80 million funding round led by Eclipse and 8VC. Founded by veterans of Waymo and Segment, Bedrock aims to bring self-driving technology to construction and industrial job sites.
Rather than building new vehicles from scratch, Bedrock is developing a retrofit self-driving kit that equips existing fleets with advanced autonomy. These systems include sensors, onboard compute, and AI designed to understand project goals, respond to dynamic worksite conditions, and execute tasks autonomously — day and night.
“We’re upgrading existing fleets with sensors, compute, and intelligence that understands project goals, adapts to changing conditions, and executes work around the clock,” said co-founder and CEO Boris Sofman in a blog post. Sofman, who previously led Waymo’s now-defunct self-driving trucking initiative, is also known for founding Anki Robotics, the creator of the popular Cozmo robot.
He’s joined by a founding team of deep industry experience: Kevin Peterson (CTO), Ajay Gummalla (VP of Engineering), and Tom Eliaz (VP of Engineering), who bring expertise from Waymo, Segment, and Twilio.
Bedrock enters a growing off-road autonomy market where startups and legacy firms alike are racing to automate heavy-duty vehicles across industries like construction, mining, and defense. The approach is especially attractive in sectors where labor shortages, safety risks, and repetitive workflows create a natural demand for automation.
The company is already testing its technology at active construction sites in Arkansas, Arizona, Texas, and California. Pilot projects are underway with Sundt Construction, Zachry Construction Corporation, Champion Site Prep Inc., and Capitol Aggregates Inc., indicating a strong early interest from industry leaders.
Bedrock joins a cohort of startups targeting off-road vehicle automation, including Kodiak Robotics, Polymath Robotics, and Overland AI. As competition heats up in this specialized but rapidly growing sector, Bedrock’s funding and experienced team position it as a serious contender in transforming the way heavy equipment is used on worksites.
