Elmo’s X Account Hacked, Used to Spread Racist and Antisemitic Content
July 14, 2025
The official X account for Elmo, the beloved Sesame Street character, was compromised over the weekend, with the attacker using the platform to post racist, antisemitic content and conspiracy-laden messages.
According to Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit organization behind Sesame Street, the group is working to regain full control of the account. Several offensive posts were published before being taken down, though some remnants of the compromise remain, including a link to a Telegram channel associated with what appears to be a crypto scam.
Hacked Account Referenced Political Conspiracies
Among the unauthorized posts, the account called on the Trump administration to release files related to the Jeffrey Epstein investigation — a topic often cited in online conspiracy theories. The posts were inconsistent with Sesame Street’s mission and voice, underscoring that the account had been hijacked.
Part of a Broader Trend on X
Elmo’s account joins a growing list of high-profile X accounts targeted since Elon Musk’s 2022 acquisition of the platform, including those belonging to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), OpenAI, and Donald Trump Jr.
Just last week, Musk’s AI company xAI was forced to apologize after its chatbot Grok posted antisemitic memes and voiced support for Adolf Hitler, prompting renewed concerns over content moderation and account security on the platform.
At the time of writing, Elmo’s account is still linked to questionable third-party content — a reminder that even trusted brand accounts are not immune from the growing wave of social media breaches.
