Claude Code Users Frustrated by Sudden Usage Limits and Silence from Anthropic
July 17, 2025
This week, many developers relying on Claude Code were blindsided by strict new usage limits—without warning, explanation, or clear guidelines. The move has sparked widespread frustration, particularly among paying customers on Claude’s highest-tier subscription, the $200/month Max plan.
Beginning Monday, users began seeing a generic error message: “Claude usage limit reached,” accompanied only by a countdown to when usage might resume. For many, this abrupt restriction disrupted active projects and derailed workflows with no transparency about what changed.
What’s worse, users report that the platform’s tracking of message counts appears inaccurate. One Max subscriber wrote: “There is no way in the 30 minutes of a few requests I have hit the 900 messages.” This sentiment echoed across Claude Code’s user forums and GitHub issues, where developers sought clarity about what limits now apply—and why.
An Anthropic spokesperson confirmed that the company is aware of slower performance and other issues affecting Claude Code, but declined to offer specific details on what caused the new usage enforcement or whether it reflects a broader policy change.
For developers relying on Claude Code for day-to-day work, the impact is significant. One user described being stuck mid-project: “It just stopped the ability to make progress. I tried Gemini and Kimi, but nothing really competes with Claude Code’s capabilities.”
The problem seems to go deeper than just individual access issues. Over the past four days, Anthropic’s systems have shown signs of strain. API users have reported overload errors, while the company’s own status page has logged multiple incidents—despite still showing 100% uptime overall.
Much of the frustration stems from Anthropic’s tiered pricing model, which promotes high message limits on paid plans but avoids committing to guaranteed usage levels. The Max plan, marketed as 20 times more generous than the Pro tier, and the Pro tier itself being five times more than the Free plan, all come with fine print: usage may vary depending on demand.
This ambiguity leaves even paying users unsure of what they’re entitled to, and when restrictions might kick in. Without advance notice or documentation about the change, users are left to speculate. For developers working under tight deadlines or in production environments, this lack of predictability is a major liability.
Some users have acknowledged the potential business rationale behind the restrictions. The $200 Max plan has been heavily used by power users who, in some cases, generate over $1,000 worth of API usage per day—a model that may not be financially viable for the company over the long term. Still, users argue that sudden enforcement without explanation is not the right approach.
“Just be transparent,” one user said. “The lack of communication just causes people to lose confidence in them.”
For now, developers are left waiting—not just for their usage limit to reset, but for answers. Whether Anthropic’s quiet throttling of Claude Code is a temporary response to capacity issues or the beginning of a new policy remains unclear. But one thing is certain: trust can be eroded faster than any message limit.
