Perplexity’s Bold Bet on India: How a Quiet AI Challenger Is Building Global Scale
July 17, 2025
While the global spotlight remains on U.S.-based AI leaders, one fast-rising startup is taking a different path to scale: India. Perplexity, the AI-powered search engine, is accelerating its expansion into the world’s most populous nation, and its recent moves suggest a calculated effort to dominate in emerging markets before others catch on.

This week, Perplexity announced a major partnership with Bharti Airtel, India’s second-largest telecom operator. The deal gives Airtel’s 360 million subscribers free access to a 12-month subscription to Perplexity Pro — normally priced at $200 annually. Even more significant: the partnership is exclusive. No other telecom provider in India can offer similar perks, positioning Airtel — and Perplexity — for a powerful user growth curve.

This isn't a one-off. Perplexity has been steadily forming strategic partnerships across the globe, including alliances with SoftBank in Japan and SK Telecom in South Korea. But India offers something unique: scale. With its rapidly growing smartphone and internet user base, India is one of the most promising markets for mass adoption of generative AI technologies.

The data already supports this momentum. In the second quarter, Perplexity’s app downloads in India surged 600% year-over-year, reaching 2.8 million. Monthly active users also spiked by 640%, climbing to 3.7 million — making India its largest market by active users. While still trailing behind ChatGPT in total users and revenue, Perplexity’s growth rates in India are outpacing even its biggest competitors.

What makes India such a fertile ground for Perplexity’s AI search product? Part of the answer lies in market opportunity. There are few homegrown AI startups focused on AI-powered search, and consumer curiosity around smart assistants and chat-based search is growing fast. On top of that, India has a highly digital, mobile-first user base — one that’s often willing to experiment with new technologies if price isn’t a barrier.

To further entrench itself in the market, Perplexity has also partnered with Paytm, one of India's largest fintech platforms. This integration brings its AI search into an app used by hundreds of millions of users — including for everyday transactions via India’s government-backed UPI payments system.

The company’s leadership is also showing strong commitment to India. CEO Aravind Srinivas has publicly committed time and investment to growing AI talent in the country, including a $1 million initiative and a pledge of personal mentorship hours. Though plans to appoint a local executive were paused after an overwhelming applicant response, the signal is clear: India is at the heart of Perplexity’s global roadmap.

Still, monetizing the market remains a challenge. Indian consumers are famously price-sensitive, and so far, Perplexity hasn't seen meaningful in-app purchase revenue from the region. However, the Airtel deal could help change that. By onboarding tens of millions of users onto its Pro plan — even for free — the company opens the door to future paid conversions, especially if it can deliver consistent value.

Meanwhile, ChatGPT remains far ahead in both revenue and total user numbers, pulling in nearly $800 million globally in Q2 alone. But Perplexity’s strategy isn’t just about short-term revenue — it’s about building a global footprint in the places that will define the next billion users.

If Perplexity can convert its explosive growth in India into sustainable revenue, it may emerge not just as an OpenAI alternative, but as a true global contender — forged in the fires of the world’s most dynamic digital market.
