Mastodon 4.4 Begins Laying Groundwork for Quote Posts and Adds Major UX Upgrades
July 8, 2025
Mastodon, the decentralized social network alternative to X and Threads, has just released version 4.4, kicking off a wave of updates focused on usability and moderation.

Quote Posts Are Coming — Carefully
The most notable change: Mastodon is preparing to introduce Quote Posts, similar to X’s Quote Tweets. While not yet live, the update includes backend support for displaying them — full functionality is expected in version 4.5 later this year.

Unlike other platforms, Mastodon is taking steps to prevent misuse. Users will be able to opt out of being quoted, revoke quotes after the fact, and will be notified when quoted — all aimed at curbing harassment and “dunking” behavior.

Improved Profiles, Lists, Media, and Navigation
Version 4.4 also brings a number of UX improvements:

  • Featured content and carousel Pinned Posts on profiles

  • New profile widget showing mutual follows

  • Easier list management from follower/following lists

  • Redesigned media player with hotkeys and better controls

  • Photo zooming and alt-text reminders on mobile

  • Simplified onboarding (now just 2 steps)

  • The “Explore” tab has been renamed Trending, and the app’s navigation is more consistent across devices.

    Backend and Admin Tools
Admins now have new tools for legal compliance, including support for multiple languages, minimum age settings, and better ToS management.

These changes continue Mastodon's shift toward a more scalable and structured platform, with a growing team and even a new nonprofit entity in Europe.
