Goldman Sachs to Employ AI Coding Agent Devin as ‘New Employee’
July 11, 2025
Goldman Sachs, known for its forward-thinking approach to technology, is taking a bold step by incorporating an AI coding assistant into its development teams. The bank’s Chief Information Officer, Marco Argenti, told CNBC that they are planning to deploy hundreds, and potentially thousands, of instances of Cognition’s AI agent Devin across their engineering division.

Devin, developed by the AI startup Cognition, first gained widespread attention when it launched last year, quickly going viral on social media. While early excitement around Devin’s coding capabilities was tempered by research pointing out its struggles with more complex coding challenges, Cognition has continued to improve the tool. The latest version, Devin 2.1, released as of May 2025, reportedly performs best when working with large codebases, where it can leverage extensive context to generate useful code suggestions.

Goldman Sachs currently employs around 12,000 human developers. The bank is not seeking to replace these professionals but rather to augment their productivity by creating a ‘hybrid’ workforce, where AI coding agents like Devin work alongside human developers. According to Argenti, these AI agents will be supervised by humans and are expected to help speed up development, reduce mundane tasks, and allow engineers to focus on more complex, creative problems.

The financial industry is often seen as conservative in adopting new technologies, but Goldman Sachs has built a reputation for being an early adopter of AI-driven developer tools, having used various coding copilots internally since at least 2024. By integrating Devin into their engineering processes, the bank aims to stay at the forefront of innovation and efficiency in software development.

This move reflects a broader trend in the tech and finance sectors where companies are increasingly experimenting with AI to boost productivity and streamline workflows, rather than viewing AI as a replacement for human talent.
