Meta Acquires Voice AI Startup Play AI to Boost Natural Voice Technology
July 13, 2025
Meta has acquired Play AI, a startup specializing in AI-generated human-sounding voices, marking another significant step in the company’s expanding investments in artificial intelligence. A Meta spokesperson confirmed the acquisition to Bloomberg, which also revealed that the entire Play AI team is set to join Meta next week. TechCrunch has reached out to Meta for additional confirmation.
According to an internal Meta memo, Play AI’s expertise in creating natural, lifelike voices and its user-friendly voice creation platform align closely with Meta’s ongoing projects and future plans. These include developments in AI Characters, Meta AI, wearable technology, and audio content creation.
Meta has been aggressively expanding its AI capabilities recently, recruiting top talent from leading organizations like OpenAI and striking partnerships such as its deal with Scale AI. This collaboration notably brought Scale AI’s CEO, Alexandr Wang, to Meta to lead a new initiative focused on superintelligence.
Financial details of the Play AI acquisition have not been disclosed. Bloomberg had earlier reported that discussions between the two companies were underway, culminating in this deal.
This acquisition strengthens Meta’s foothold in voice technology and reflects its broader strategy to integrate advanced AI across its platforms and products.
