Generative AI Apps Surged in 2025 With 1.7 Billion Downloads and $1.87B in Revenue
July 30, 2025
Generative AI apps are experiencing explosive growth in 2025, with users downloading them 1.7 billion times in the first half of the year — a sharp increase from 1 billion downloads in the second half of 2024, according to a new report from Sensor Tower. In-app revenue has more than doubled as well, hitting $1.87 billion compared to $932 million in the previous six months.
User engagement has grown in tandem. People spent over 15.6 billion hours using GenAI apps across 426 billion sessions, nearly doubling the 8.5 billion hours logged in H2 2024.
Asia Leads the Global GenAI Boom
Asia emerged as the fastest-growing market, accounting for 42.6% of all GenAI app downloads, driven by surging adoption in India and Mainland China. The region saw an 80% increase in downloads in H1 2025 — far outpacing Europe (51%) and North America (39%).
In terms of spending, Latin America showed the highest growth rate for in-app purchases, though North America maintained the lead in overall revenue share at 40%.
ChatGPT Still Dominates the Market
ChatGPT continues to lead global revenue rankings in nearly every country except China, where local alternative DeepSeek saw a rapid spike in downloads post-launch. ChatGPT’s performance remains strong across all metrics — usage, retention, and cross-platform engagement.
Users engaged with ChatGPT for an average of more than 12 days per month, with 16 minutes of daily use, nearly matching top apps in the search and browser category, which average 18.2 minutes daily. Sensor Tower noted that ChatGPT is now being used on par with apps like Reddit and X, and trails only Google in usage frequency.
Beyond search and productivity, ChatGPT’s use has expanded into lifestyle and entertainment — with over a third of all prompts in Q2 2025 tied to categories like health, shopping, meal planning, and personal finance.
ChatGPT also sees strong multi-platform adoption. In the U.S., more than 15% of users access it across both mobile and web, higher than newer platforms like Temu and Threads — although still below heavyweights like Google, YouTube, Amazon, and Facebook, which exceed 25% cross-platform usage.
AI as a Trend—And a Buzzword
The report also highlights the AI branding boom: the term "AI" now appears over 100,000 times in app descriptions across the App Store and Google Play. In total, apps with "AI" in their descriptions amassed 7.5 billion downloads in H1 2025 — about 10% of all global app installs.
While the inclusion of "AI" in app names may provide a short-term boost in downloads, the report suggests the effect is fleeting. Still, a growing number of apps across categories like photo editing, diet & nutrition, test prep, tutoring, and translation are racing to incorporate AI — both in branding and functionality.
A New Era of App Usage
Sensor Tower’s data points to a major shift in how users interact with mobile apps. What started as a wave of interest in generative AI has grown into a foundational trend, reshaping how people search, learn, create content, and manage everyday tasks. With usage and revenue climbing rapidly, GenAI apps are becoming a core part of digital life — not just a novelty.
