LG Innotek Partners with Aeva to Manufacture Next-Gen 4D Lidar for Automobiles and Beyond
July 29, 2025
LG Innotek, the components and materials arm of South Korea’s LG Group, has entered into a strategic partnership with Aeva Technologies, a U.S.-based company developing advanced 4D lidar sensing systems. The collaboration marks a significant step in bringing Aeva’s cutting-edge perception technology to mass-market automotive applications — and eventually to consumer electronics, robotics, and industrial automation.
As part of the deal, LG Innotek will manufacture and supply Aeva’s Atlas Ultra 4D lidar sensors, beginning with automotive customers. The company will also invest up to $50 million in Aeva, acquiring an equity stake of approximately 6%.
“The first part of the partnership is focused on the automotive sector,” said Soroush Salehian, Aeva’s co-founder and CEO. “LG Innotek will act as our manufacturing partner for some of the top 10 global passenger vehicle OEMs.”
Founded in 2017, Aeva has spent nearly $500 million developing its proprietary “4D lidar on a chip” — a breakthrough in sensing technology. Unlike traditional lidar, which estimates distances using time-of-flight, Aeva uses frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) technology to measure both distance and velocity for every pixel in real time.
“It’s like going from black-and-white to color camera,” Salehian explained. “We get this velocity information as a new dimension.”
The company's lidar system is fully integrated into a silicon photonics module, allowing for chip-scale miniaturization. This innovation makes it more feasible to embed high-performance lidar into a wide range of products, from autonomous vehicles to robotic systems and portable electronics.
LG Innotek’s manufacturing scale and global reach could play a crucial role in commercializing Aeva’s technology at volume, helping to meet the demands of automakers and new tech markets alike.
The funding from LG Innotek will support Aeva’s efforts to further miniaturize its lidar hardware, continue product development, and expand its engineering teams. “We’re going to make it down to a monolithic, single-chip,” Salehian said, emphasizing the company's long-term vision for scalable, cost-effective lidar technology.
This partnership highlights the growing convergence between traditional manufacturing powerhouses and cutting-edge sensing startups — a trend poised to reshape how machines perceive and interact with the world around them.
